Get to Know Edgar Allan Poe

Just mention the name Edgar Allan Poe and images of mystery and darkness come to mind. Even though he only lived 40 years, Poe’s writings in the 19th century have lived on. This fall join Charleston Stage for the production of “Nevermore” and get a glimpse into Poe’s life.

This performance incorporates scenes from Poe’s tales, “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Masque of the Red Death” while transporting the audience to 1827 Sullivan’s Island where a young Poe served in the army at Ft. Moultrie and wrote his classic short story “The Gold Bug,” the story of William Legrand who is bitten by a gold colored bug. The story unfolds into an adventure leading to buried treasure.

Poe, often referred to as “America’s Shakespeare,” created or mastered the short story, detective fiction, science fiction, lyric poetry and the horror story, according to the Poe Museum in Virginia. Read an extensive bio on Poe on the Poe Museum website.

Written and produced by Charleston Stage Founder Julian Wiles, “Nevermore” runs Oct. 19 to Nov. 4 at the historic Dock Street Theatre in downtown Charleston.

For an extra spooky night out, Bulldog Tours is offering A Haunting Night of Poe package with two tickets to a Friday or Saturday night performance of “Nevermore” and two tickets to Bulldog Tours’ Poe Walking Tour ($80 package).

Best Western’s King Charles Inn is also offering an overnight package that includes discounted show tickets, a gift certificate to Poe’s Tavern and a copy of “The Gold Bug.”

Let us know if you see “Nevermore” or take the Poe Walking Tour; we’d love to hear about your experience.

We’re of course partial to Charleston, but here’s the truth. There are many similarities however there are some differences in our opinion:

  • Both cities are historic and beautiful.
  • Both cities are extremely walkable. Savannah, with it’s park-like squares maybe more walkable than Charleston.
  • Charleston has a more established and food scene with many more options.
  • Charleston has better hotels and shopping.
  • Both cities have equally good tours.
  • Charleston has better beach options. Savannah has Tybee which is great, however it’s 1 beach vibe versus Charleston which has 3 beaches with different vibes. Checkout this Charleston beach guide article: https://travelerofcharleston.com/guide-charlestons-beaches/
  • In Savannah you can walk with alcoholic beverages on the street. This is not allowed in Charleston. This can be good or bad depending on your stance.
  • Savannah is more affordable.
