Things to Do in Charleston in May

Book a Water Tour

Charleston is a coastal city, so you need to get out on the water if your visiting in May.  There are a number of different ways to do this…. take the Charleston Water Taxi from downtown to the USS Yorktown, a boat tour to Fort Sumter, a sunset sail aboard the Schooner Pride’s 3 mast tall ship, kayak through Shem Creek with Nature Adventures, venture out to Boneyard beach with Barrier Island Eco Tours or book a fishing charter with Full Circle Fishing Charter. Anyone of these tours will give you the opportunity to really see the beauty of the Low Country.

Take a Carriage Tour

The weather in May is ideal for a carriage tour.  This gives you a great view of the city without getting too hot and tired. The guides are fantastic and are a wealth of knowledge on Charleston. Two carriage tours we recommend are:

Palmetto Carriage:  Look for their Big Red Barn and feel free to visit the horses before your tour.

Old South Carriage: They offer both a Daytime Carriage Tour and an Evening Haunted Carriage Tour.

Grab a Bite to Eat

Charleston is known for fabulous food. Make sure to stop in and taste some of the deliciousness the Low Country has to offer.

Carmella’s Cafe and Dessert Bar (Downtown):  This is a great place to stop by and grab lunch, dessert, a drink or all three. (No judgement here :))  Their generationally tested gourmet dessert recipes are made fresh every morning and sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.  They don’t take reservations, so feel free to walk in anytime or order online to-go.

Charleston Fish House (Mount Pleasant): If your looking for a great meal with a great view of the harbor, this is a fantastic option. The Fish House is located at Patriots Point so you can take the Charleston Water Taxi from downtown across the Harbor, visit the Yorktown and then grab lunch or dinner here.

Getting Around Charleston, SC

We’re of course partial to Charleston, but here’s the truth. There are many similarities however there are some differences in our opinion:

  • Both cities are historic and beautiful.
  • Both cities are extremely walkable. Savannah, with it’s park-like squares maybe more walkable than Charleston.
  • Charleston has a more established and food scene with many more options.
  • Charleston has better hotels and shopping.
  • Both cities have equally good tours.
  • Charleston has better beach options. Savannah has Tybee which is great, however it’s 1 beach vibe versus Charleston which has 3 beaches with different vibes. Checkout this Charleston beach guide article: https://travelerofcharleston.com/guide-charlestons-beaches/
  • In Savannah you can walk with alcoholic beverages on the street. This is not allowed in Charleston. This can be good or bad depending on your stance.
  • Savannah is more affordable.
  • TourPass offers all-inclusive passes in both cities: https://tourpass.com
