Pick Up These Books for Your Beach Reads

book on beach_smallReading on the beach or in the backyard hammock is a must-do summer activity. We have some book suggestions to help you get to relaxing even faster.

We recently reviewed “The Summer Girls” by Lowcountry author Mary Alice Monroe, and here’s another Charleston area author who can pen a terrific novel. Dorothea Benton Frank’s latest book is “The Last Original Wife,” a story of love and friendship set in Charleston.

Remember “The Devil Wears Prada” – the book-turned-movie a decade ago? She’s back. “Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns” by Lauren Weisberger catches us up with Andy Sachs, now in her dream job and about to be married – until secrets come to the surface.

For a page-turning mystery of the comical variety, pick up “Bad Monkey” from well-known author Carl Hiaasen. Andrew Yancy has a human arm in his freezer and is out to prove it’s murder – after he navigates a series of unpredictable events.

Grace Stanton’s life as a rising media star and beloved lifestyle blogger takes a surprising turn when she catches her husband cheating and torpedoes his pricey sports car straight into the family swimming pool. You’ll want to see how this turns out in Mary Kay Andrews’ new book, “Ladies Night.”

If you want a dose of humor and sarcasm, “Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls” by David Sedaris should be in your beach bag. In this series of essays, Sedaris remembers his father’s dinnertime attire (shirtsleeves and underpants), his first colonoscopy (remarkably pleasant), and the time he considered buying the skeleton of a murdered Pygmy.

Getting Around Charleston, SC

We’re of course partial to Charleston, but here’s the truth. There are many similarities however there are some differences in our opinion: 

  • Both cities are historic and beautiful. 
  • Both cities are extremely walkable. Savannah, with it’s park-like squares maybe more walkable than Charleston. 
  • Charleston has a more established and food scene with many more options. 
  • Charleston has better hotels and shopping.
  • Both cities have equally good tours.

  • In Savannah you can walk with alcoholic beverages on the street. This is not allowed in Charleston. This can be good or bad depending on your stance. 
  • Savannah is more affordable.
