From seersucker to sundresses and flip-flops to bow ties, Charleston has a summer style all her own and mostly it centers around keeping cool.

Seersucker is a thin, puckered cotton fabric usually found in a striped or checkered pattern. The fabric is woven together in such a way that the thread bunches together so it looks wrinkled. That lightweight fabric and wrinkled look make seersucker a Southern staple during the hot, humid summer.

Bow ties are the sign of a true Southern gentleman. If you’re visiting from the North, you might be surprised to see men wearing bow ties, but here below the Mason-Dixon Line, they are a common fashion accessory.

The summertime style rule for the South is generally to be as comfortable as you can when the mercury (and humidity) rises. That’s why you’re likely to see flip-flops and shorts and plenty of sundresses and outfits in lightweight fabrics.

Linen pants and blazers are also a fabulous option for summer and fit right in with Charleston’s laid-back summer style. Eyelet dresses and separates give the ladies a flirty feminine flair while keeping cool.

Select light colors as another way to beat the heat. Fortunately, white was hot on the spring runway so you have the perfect opportunity to be trendy, not sweaty.

We’re of course partial to Charleston, but here’s the truth. There are many similarities however there are some differences in our opinion:

  • Both cities are historic and beautiful.
  • Both cities are extremely walkable. Savannah, with it’s park-like squares maybe more walkable than Charleston.
  • Charleston has a more established and food scene with many more options.
  • Charleston has better hotels and shopping.
  • Both cities have equally good tours.
  • Charleston has better beach options. Savannah has Tybee which is great, however it’s 1 beach vibe versus Charleston which has 3 beaches with different vibes. Checkout this Charleston beach guide article: https://travelerofcharleston.com/guide-charlestons-beaches/
  • In Savannah you can walk with alcoholic beverages on the street. This is not allowed in Charleston. This can be good or bad depending on your stance.
  • Savannah is more affordable.
