Cookie Washington: Rag Basket Making
This craft is a simple, quick, and eco-friendly way to repurpose old, discarded fabrics, inspired by the traditions of our ancestors. By learning just one basic stitch with either a needle or a large safety pin, you can create beautiful projects using yards upon yards of fabric strips.
Cookie began making baskets and rugs during a time of personal loss, motivated by her desire to prevent her loved ones’ clothing from ending up in a landfill. Annually, approximately 92 million tons of textile waste is generated, with the US accounting for over 17 million tons of that total.
Instead of discarding old t-shirts, baby clothes, or cherished items, guests are encouraged to bring various materials they wish to incorporate into their projects. Cotton fabrics are the most cost-effective choice for these rugs, as they are washable, durable, and designed for long-lasting use.
Students may also purchase a kit directly from the artist.
