Rarely does anything good come out of a corn maze. OK, well, at least not in the movies. But here in the Lowcountry we have plenty of chances to redeem the scary corn maze and turn it into a fun weekend activity.
Here are three places you can enjoy fall fun with a corn maze and some pumpkins.
Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch
Wind your way through the 8-acre corn maze in the shape of this year’s sponsor logo, Live 5 News. Also available at the pumpkin patch is a jump pillow, a mountain of hay bales, a tire climb and sand pit play area, corn hole toss, goat and rabbit enclosure, tube swings and a rock climbing wall. Also, take a family friendly hayride down Monster Alley showcasing the sillier side of monsters. The Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch is open daily throughout October.
Legare Farms Pumpkin Patch
Open each weekend in October, visitors can pick pumpkins and get lost in the 10-acre wax myrtle maze on Johns Island. The traditions of hedge mazes go back thousands of years; several in Europe are 600 to 800 years old, according to the website. Legare Farm claims to have the largest wax myrtle maze in the world. The next largest (7 acres) is in Australia. The maze becomes haunted on Oct. 19 and 20. Other activities include hayrides, horse rides, make-your-own scarecrow factory, fish and turtle feeding and a playground.
West Farm Corn Maze
At this Moncks Corner corn maze, you don’t only have to find your way out of the maze but solve a mystery too. The 6-acre corn maze – designed, mapped and cut by MazePlay – uses the latest GPS technology so you should brush up on your map reading skills to hit all the checkpoints in the maze.
The maze also incorporates FSI: Farm Scene Investigation. Here’s how it works: Farmer Joe is missing. There was an accident, and it appears to be foul play. There are seven farm animal suspects for you to investigate. Collect the evidence to find the weapon and the location where the crime took place. You will find six location scenes within the corn maze. At each location you will find an animal and a tool to eliminate as a suspect and a weapon. Punch your card to keep track of your clues.
The West Farm Corn Maze is open Friday through Nov. 4 (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only). There’s also a scarecrow-themed 2.8-mile corn maze and a small, .3-mile maze in the shape of a pumpkin for little visitors. Other activities include a pumpkin barn, children’s play area, farm zoo and hayride.
