This time of year, we admit it’s tough dragging ourselves from the air conditioning, but that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of ways to enjoy Charleston while staying cool.

Doodle 4 Google

The Gibbes Museum of Art is showcasing the South Carolina Doodle 4 Google 2012 finalists through July 31. Entries from kindergarten through high school students were submitted from across the state and these 10 finalists represent the top submissions in each age group.

Doodle 4 Google is one of Google’s initiatives to encourage and celebrate the creativity of young people by asking students to create their own Google doodle. The theme this year was “If I could travel in time, I’d visit…” The students then drew their response in the form of the Google logo.

The state finalists went on to compete with students around the country. Google employees and guest judges selected the 50 state winners.

The 10 state finalists’ works are on display in the Welcome Gallery of the museum, which can be accessed free of charge.

Art and Eating

Dash from cool art gallery to cool art gallery at the Palette and Palate Stroll on July 13. This annual summer event is dedicated to fine art, cuisine and wine (Hey! Three of our favorite things!). Stroll the historic streets of downtown Charleston while stopping at some of the city’s most prominent art galleries and dining on food prepared by some of Charleston’s top chefs.

Participating galleries and restaurants include Corrigan Gallery and Barsa Tapas; Dog & Horse Fine Art and Circa 1886; Ella Richardson Fine Art and Blu; Helena Fox Fine Art and Anson; Horton Hayes Fine Art and Oak; Smith Killian Fine Art and McCrady’s; The Sylvan Gallery and Eli’s Table; and Wells Gallery and Social. Presented by the Charleston Fine Art Dealers’ Association, proceeds from the event benefit the association’s visual arts scholarships.

Theater Premiere

Pure Theatre’s premiere of “Long Song” by John Kolvenbach opens July 13 and runs through Aug. 4. Directed by R.W. Smith, “Love Song” is the story of self-exiled Beane, a man who has little to show that he exists in this world.

His sister and her husband try to lure Beane out of his shell but are too caught up in their own busy and complicated lives to have much effect. One night when Beane’s apartment is robbed by a mysterious woman, things change — and suddenly Beane can see in technicolor. This offbeat comedy follows Beane’s adventure into the real world and what it means to love, in all its insane forms.

It’s adult content so keep that in mind. Head to www.puretheatre.org for info and tickets.

Getting Around Charleston, SC

We’re of course partial to Charleston, but here’s the truth. There are many similarities however there are some differences in our opinion:

  • Both cities are historic and beautiful.
  • Both cities are extremely walkable. Savannah, with it’s park-like squares maybe more walkable than Charleston.
  • Charleston has a more established and food scene with many more options.
  • Charleston has better hotels and shopping.
  • Both cities have equally good tours.
  • Charleston has better beach options. Savannah has Tybee which is great, however it’s 1 beach vibe versus Charleston which has 3 beaches with different vibes. Checkout this Charleston beach guide article: https://travelerofcharleston.com/guide-charlestons-beaches/
  • In Savannah you can walk with alcoholic beverages on the street. This is not allowed in Charleston. This can be good or bad depending on your stance.
  • Savannah is more affordable.
  • TourPass offers all-inclusive passes in both cities: https://tourpass.com
