Sullivans Island is only 10 miles from downtown Charleston and is accessible via Mount Pleasant. This beautiful and quaint island town has a fantastic natural beach that is totally uncommercialized and is a favorite of local residents. The only drawbacks for beach-goers is that there are no public restrooms or public parking. You must arrive fairly early on weekends to get a decent parking lot wherever you’re able to on the side of the street. The island is known historically because of Fort Moultrie which is located geographicly at the southern tip of the island. Fort Moultrie, along with Fort Sumter and Fort Johnson in James Island helped protect the harbor from intruders and was instrumental in skirmishes the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Another favorite is the Sullivans Island Lighthouse.
