The Cooper River Bridge Run attracts thousands of runners to Charleston each year for one of the country’s top 10K races. In fact, this year’s race sold out weeks before the event on March 31.
With Charleston’s mild climate, running is a popular sport – even the diehard runners brave the heat of July and August. The area hosts more than 60 local races and on any given day, the biking/walking path on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge over the Cooper River is lined with runners.
So if you’re a runner – either for fun or for serious competition – visiting the Holy City you won’t have a problem finding a place to lace up your shoes and log some miles.
While the Cooper River Bridge offers some terrific views, here are some other favorite running spots (consider it an insider’s secret):
- Hampton Park: At 63 acres, this is one of the city’s largest parks and makes a great spot for a quiet run.
- Colonial Lake: Looking for a running buddy? This park is filled with people jogging, walking their dogs or simply strolling around the lake. Situation in the heart of the Charleston peninsula,
- I’On: If you’re in Mount Pleasant, this neighborhood of homes and businesses has several trails and nature walks. Check out this guide to the I’On Village Walk.
- Ashley River Road Bike Path: Asphalt bike and pedestrian path that is 10 feet wide and 1.5 miles long.
- Ashley River Walk: This path begins on Lockwood Drive in downtown Charleston and winds along the Ashley River with views of the water, marsh and marina. If you’re feeling up for a long run, follow Lockwood until it turns into Broad Street and follow Broad right down to The Battery on East Bay Street.
