On Feb. 17, 1864, the H. L. Hunley became the world’s first successful combat submarine when it sank the USS Housatonic. After signaling to shore that the mission was accomplished, the submarine and her crew of eight mysteriously vanished. Lost at sea for more than a century, the Hunley was located in 1995 by Clive Cussler’s National Underwater and Marine Agency. The vessel was raised in 2000 and delivered to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston, where scientists are working to preserve the Hunley for future generations.

The North Charleston Fire Museum and Education Center is a one-of-a-kind destination that blends history with hands-on learning for the whole family. Home to the largest collection of professionally restored American LaFrance fire trucks in the country, the museum showcases over 20 vehicles, with some dating back to the 1780s. Each piece in the collection is not only a historical artifact but also fully operational!
Beyond the impressive collection, the museum offers interactive exhibits and theater presentations. You can get a sense of what it’s like to be a firefighter with hands-on equipment, or learn about fire prevention in their “Home Fire Hazard Theater” with live smoke effects. Many of the guides are current or retired firefighters, providing a truly authentic and educational experience that makes fire safety fun and unforgettable.
