It wouldn’t be very friendly of us if we didn’t pause and give a big THANK YOU to all those kind Conde Nast Traveler readers who voted our lovely Charleston as the friendliest city in the United States.
Participants in the Readers’ Choice Survey praised Charleston’s hospitality so much that “would consider living there full time.” Hey, who could blame them? Charleston has pretty much everything anyone could want: warm weather, sunny beaches, historic streets and incredible restaurants?
The magazine also noted:
The historic town earned accolades for its blend of “undervalued local culture,” history, and natural beauty, as well as the “incredible food” and Charleston City Market, with its boutiques and art galleries. In short, Charleston is the total package, landing it atop the list for the second year in a row.
Rounding out the top 5 spots are Savannah, Ga.; San Antonio, Texas; Telluride, Colo.; and New Orleans, La.
Here are the top 5 reasons we think Charleston residents are so warm and welcoming:
1. Warm weather and sunny skies. Sure, the summer can get a little sticky but we sure aren’t complaining about our perfect spring and fall and our mild winters. It’s tough to be grouchy when the sun is shining.
2. Beachin’ whenever we want. Folks travel hours from Ohio to visit our beaches and we can sit on the sand anytime we feel like it. And it’s impossible to not be happy when you’re at the beach.
3. Food, food and food. Our local restaurants are some of the best in world, serving everything from shrimp ‘n grits and burgers to steaks and fresh seafood.
4. Historic streets and buildings. Walking the cobblestone streets of downtown Charleston is a true treat and offers up a fantastic step back in time.
5. Events galore. There’s always something going on around Charleston. Our weekend schedules are packed with farmers markets, festivals, golf, fundraisers for local charities, art showings, concerts and theater performances.
What do you love about Charleston? What makes the people here so friendly?
