Southerly Restaurant

Fried chicken and waffles at Southerly Restaurant

It’s tough to beat a relaxing weekend brunch – steaming cup of coffee and lingering over waffles or eggs Benedict. It’s the opposite of our usual gulp of juice, bite of toast and coffee in the travel mug. Brunch is even better when you’re on vacation or visiting a new city. So here are few favorite spots to have brunch in Charleston.

Southerly Restaurant is located in Southern Season, a specialty food and gift store that opened in Mount Pleasant in 2013. It’s contemporary cuisine with a southern flair. Plus, they have a great patio where you can sip a bloody Mary on a warm morning. Brunch is served 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

No visit to Charleston is complete without breakfast at the iconic Hominy Grill in downtown Charleston. James Beard Award-winning chef and owner Robert Stehling cooks up dishes inspired by Lowcountry culture and flavors. Breakfast is served 7:30-11:30 a.m. Monday to Friday and brunch is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Try some salmon potato cakes, buttermilk pancakes or the Charleston Nasty Biscuit with fried chicken breast, cheddar cheese and sausage gravy.

Using local, farm-fresh ingredients, The Granary opened recently in the Belle Hall Shopping Center in Mount Pleasant. If you like your French toast with vanilla, strawberry preserves and bourbon maple syrup (and who doesn’t?!), you’ll like this place. And try the grits – creamy and topped with Tillamook white cheddar. Brunch is served 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday; reservations accepted.

From shrimp and grits to buttermilk fried chicken and waffles to lighter fare of yogurt and granola, Kitchen 208 is serving up a great breakfast. Plus, they have a great patio where you can hang out in downtown Charleston and sip your morning mimosa. Kitchen 208 is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily with breakfast served until 11 a.m. Monday to Friday and brunch all day Saturday and Sunday.

If you love a breakfast burrito, stop off at the Scratch Taco Boutique on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant for a farm-fresh taco on the patio. Or try the cheeseburger taco or the surf and turf taco stuffed with barbecue pork belly and fried oysters. Brunch is served 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday but you can grab breakfast anytime – 7-11 a.m. Monday to Saturday.
